Made In The Shade

2007 April 29

Alex Turner on the big screen

Highlights of a blistering day one at Coachella: the reformation of The Jesus And Mary Chain – delighted to see their combination Beach Boys on mescaline attack is undiminished despite advancing years. The quivering presence of Scarlett Johansson on backing vocals was certainly a talking point. The Sound of Sheffield was well represented – the Arctic Monkeys whipping through their street smart tales of youth and bravado with aplomb (but come on Alex, keep knocking out the tunes, no messing about), and a balletic performance from Jarvis Cocker: hampered by equipment troubles, he nevertheless delivered on all levels, musical, oratorial, you name it. Local heroes Silversun Pickups blazed a trail into the desert sky with their shoegazy vigour.

Disappointments were few, but I expected a little more from The Noisettes.. ah, maybe that’s not fair. First up on the day in the sunshine is a tough job.
