Nice piece of reporting here!!

I was a big Pirates fan in 76/77 ~ Out Of Their Skulls was a great album. I was 17 and wasn't big into punk.

I always kept an eye out for them all through the decades, and I loved Mick's playing.

A couple of years ago I saw that they were playing The Borderline in London (I live in Sunderland, but I love the Borderline) and I thought "it's now or never" and persuaded my reticent girlfriend (who didn't know who they were) they'd be great. I didn't know this of course, and there was a certain trepidition that I'd paid for a weekend, hotel, gig, meals and train fare for two to see a bunch of has-beens.

Of course, I needn't of worried ~ it was one of the best gigs I've ever attended. I was 10 feet away from Mick and smiled the whole gig through. Frank was ill and couldn't attend unfortunately, which was a shame.

I bought the new album, and the band promised to sign them. I waited in line ouside the miniscule dressing room and eventually made it: they signed with good grace, gave plecs away, had a few words with everyone and I got to shake Mick's hand.

A great, great night that will always stay with me.

Thanks for posting a touching tribute to a largely unrecognised & underrated genius. I was at Huddersfield too that night (and must have seen The Pirates about eighteen other times), unless you've seen them live you cannot understand, as you will know too well. Have seen loads of "bigger bands" before and since but nothing compares to a Pirates gig, no effects whatsoever just a Telecaster through a Marshall amp but I can still hear those deafening staccato chords mixed with brilliant lead runs, ears ringing for days after, it was bliss.
If these guys could have carried on for years more, sat in chairs even I would have still gone and paid homage to them, but sadly thats not to be. January 11th a sad day, my birthday too.
