I see from this month’s Mojo (it takes a while to make its way across the world to my post box) that Kelly Johnson, lead guitarist with the rock band Girlschool, sadly passed away on July 15th. One of the UK chart highlights of 1981 was Girlschool’s cover of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates ‘Please Don’t Touch’, Motorhead in tow, masquerading as ‘Headgirl’. Sure, we were knee-deep in post-punk at the time and far too aloof to admit we liked it. But I’m here to right that wrong.
There’s Kelly, scrapping with Fast Eddie for the solos.. both bands sound like they’re having a whale of a time, and of our chart hitsters, we can ask no more. Rock and.. indeed.. roll. Turn it up and throw away the knob.
