Mercurial, irritating, influential.. irreplaceable. RIP.
The last time I saw Tony Wilson, he was introducing a revitalised Happy Mondays at the Coachella Festival. I wasn’t too sure it was Tony Wilson.. and now I know why I wasn’t sure, alas.
He’s responsible for some of my best music memories: take a look at the programme listing for his Granada TV programme ‘So It Goes’ on Wikipedia.. early on we were watching The Jeff Raven Band (?), Noel Redding, Soft Machine and Kevin Ayers. The last show: Jonathan Richman, Ian Dury, Steel Pulse and The Clash. Fantastic.
